Mrs. Barbara Steingass

I did not like to read when I was in elementary school.  Perhaps that is why I am passionate about introducing students to the broad range of literature available to them.  I hope to help kids find the “right book” at the “right time.”   I regret that I missed great children’s literature when I was young.

Nevertheless books and reading are not the only tasks of a school librarian.  After graduating from college, I taught 8th grade American history. My favorite times with my students were when we worked with the school librarian on research.  Therefore, I earned my master’s degree from
the graduate School of Library and Information Science at Rutgers University.  I have worked in public and school libraries for more than 25 years.

The library/information field is changing rapidly which necessitates continuing education through additional graduate study and workshops.  My goal is to help students think critically and become effective users of ideas and information.

My husband and I have two children and four grandchildren.  I am thankful that I was raised in a Christian family.  This is the first time I have worked in a Catholic school.  I find it a wonderful opportunity to merge my passion for learning and information skills with my discipleship to Jesus Christ.

I appreciate the kindness of the
staff, parents, students, and members of the parish community since my first day
at Saint Ambrose School in January of 2012.
