Accelerated Reader Program 2011-2012

Grades 4 - 8

Third Quarter AR Deadline:  Friday, March 9th

This year our students will have access to the web-based version of Accelerated Reader (AR) Quizzes.  This means that any and all books that have an AR quiz, the students will be able to take that quiz versus relying on our school to purchase quizzes for our own database.  This is a wonderful added benefit for our students.

New A/R Assignment Procedures: Effective Second Quarter, 2011

I.  Teachers who assign A/R’s need to look at the ZPD listed on each student’s most current STAR assessment report.  If it is in the beginning of the school year, he or she should look at each student’s final STAR assessment report from the previous school year to obtain this information.

II.  The assigning teacher will then sit down and assist each student with setting an A/R goal for the quarter.  At this time, the students are then given their ZPD number and are responsible for reading a book within this given range. If a student does not read a book within this given range, then it does not count.

III.  Students who are new to the school should be initially assigned to read a book at grade level until a STARS assessment is taken.  Once the results of the assessment are received, the assigning teacher will meet with the student to help him or her set a goal. The reading assignment will then be adapted accordingly.

IV.  Depending on the quarter, students in Jr. High (grades 7-8) will read two books in their ZPD level plus the required class novel.  When there is no required novel, students in seventh and eighth grade will be required to read two books in their ZPD level. If a student scores a nine or ten on the A/R test for the required books in the quarter, then he or she should be assigned to read books at a higher ZPD level.

V.  In third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade, the students are required to read two A/R books per quarter.  The students at this level should score approximately nine or ten on the quizzes for both books in the quarter to move up to the next ZPD level.

VI.  It is the responsibility of the assigning teacher to monitor and work with his or her students to adapt the A/R levels as needed.

VII.  For students who have a ZPD that would take them into the intermediate fiction (grades 3 and below) and young adult books (grades 4-6), please obtain and send home a permission slip from Andrea which includes an agreement of the content of a book that the child will read for A/R. A parent signature must accompany this form.
*If the original permission form sent home with the student is lost, parents may print a replacement form by following the link below.

  Accelerated Reader Program 2011-2012

Grade 3

As of second quarter, the third graders will begin participating in our Accelerated Reader (AR) Incentive Program.  This program is designed to encourage the students to find the joy in reading every day.   Students will be able to see their progress as they achieve the point levels outlined below.  This is not a mandatory program; however, it should be strongly encouraged that your child participates.

The program will work as follows:  Students will select books based on their reading level.  Their reading level can be found on their Star Assessment Report in the ZPD section.  Once they have read the book, they will take an AR quiz.  As each student takes an AR quiz, the points earned will be accumulated through the school year.  The following levels will be used as an incentive to keep reading.  As the student achieves a new point level, he/she will be awarded the following:

5 Points           Ribbon Sticker

10 Points         Pick-a-prize – pencil/bookmark/sticker

15 Points         Pick-a-prize – pencil/bookmark/sticker

20 Points         Pick-a-prize – pencil/bookmark/sticker

25 Points         Snack item (fruit gummy)

30 Points         Poster

50 Points         Spirit Dress Day

100 Points       Pizza party with the principal and appearance on the morning announcements

A report will be run every Friday morning to determine who has reached a new level.  Prizes will be awarded during library time on Friday.
